Security Alert: Police, DSS officers invade residences of PDP chieftains ahead of tomorrow by-election
At about 2 am today, a combined team of Nigerian Police Force and Department of State Services (DSS) deployed for tomorrow’s by-election invaded the residence of a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Egosi community of Oke-Ero local government of Kwara State, Chief Joseph Adeniyi, aka Azeez Egosi.
Luckily, Chief Adeniyi escaped but his son, who is a soldier was arrested and taken away by the security officers, who came in company of some members of the APC. His whereabouts remains unknown till now. A few other stalwarts of the PDP in Oke-Ero also had similar doses of the police crackdown.
Similarly, Mr Lukman Idris, who is the PDP ward Chairman in Iwo, Isin local government area, which is the ward of former deputy governor of Kwara, Prince Joel Ogundeji, has also been arrested by the security operatives.
A couple of PDP members have also been arrested in Ajase-Ipo, Irepodun local government area in the early hours of today.
Recall that few days ago, we alerted the general public to the plans of the Federal Government and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to clampdown on top members of the PDP in Kwara South ahead of Saturday’s Ekiti/Isin/Oke-Ero/Irepodun federal constituency by-election.
As we informed Nigerians, this is to prevent the PDP members from canvassing support and mobilizing voters for the candidate of their party in the election.
This action of the security operatives is not only illegal and barbaric but a violation of fundamental human rights. More so, such actions constitute a threat to our nascent democracy and also represent gross abuse of state institutions by the APC-led Federal Government.
We call on the media, civil society organisations, local and international observers and the general public to take note of this primitive show of power and other pre-election intimidation tactics of the FG and APC.
Concerned Kwara PDP Youths.
