Thabo Thomas Bester is still alive after escaping from prison, according to a picture given by well-known journalist Keabetswe.

According to Groundup.org.za, On 3 May 2022, the Department of Correctional Services announced that Bester had been found dead in his cell at the Mangaung Correctional Centre, a maximum security private prison operated by multinational security company G4S. A fire had broken out and a dead body was found under a burnt mattress.

In January, we revealed that the person whose body was found in the cell was dead before the fire broke out. According to the post-mortem report, which we have seen, the person was killed by a blunt force injury to the head.

There are reports that the CCTV cameras positioned improperly were towards the prison exit. Yet, video captures two individuals fleeing the prison quickly immediately before the smoke was initially noticed.
