In the first episode of the Showmax Original series Adulting, Thembinkosi’s character Mthembu Bonga is seen with his wife in a hotel room. The woman’s name has not been released, but it is said to be a one-night stand. Bonga is a successful businessman who is used to getting what he wants, and he is clearly interested in her. However, he also seems a little hesitant, like he’s not sure if he’s doing the right thing.
In December 2021, actor, TV host and author Mike Hill sparked a debate about how men are represented on television behind Issa Rae’s hit series Insecure.
Phathu Makwarela is responsible for both writing and producing Adulting, while Menga Nhlabathi is credited for her work as director of the project. Additionally, it is the first Showmax Original to be produced by Tshedza Pictures.
The scene is played out in a somewhat ambiguous way, and it is not clear what the ultimate outcome will be. However, it is clear that Bonga is conflicted about his feelings for the woman, and that this is likely to be a recurring theme throughout the series.
In an interview with Showmax, Thembinkosi Mthembu said that he enjoyed playing this scene because it allowed him to explore a different side of Bonga’s personality. He said, “I think it’s important for actors to be able to show different shades of their characters, and this scene was a great opportunity for me to do that.”
He also said that he was impressed with the way the scene was filmed. He said: “The director did a great job of creating a sense of intimacy and tension. It was really challenging to shoot but also fun.”
