According to GroundUp, During a meeting on 18 October 2022, the South African Police Service (SAPS) told the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) and the Judicial Inspectorate of Correctional Services (JICS) that rapist and murderer Thabo Bester escaped from Mangaung Correctional Centre, on 3 May 2022.

The police were also questioned about why they didn’t look into and arrest Dr. Nandipha Magudumana, Bester’s companion and purported customary wife, who is accused of using a false identity to help him go.

An identity tag was still on one of the remains, which Magudumana purportedly identified as being her father. The second was the one where she purportedly asserted that she was Bester, although DNA testing eventually disproved this.
