Court jails 25-year-old man for stealing sheep

In a courtroom situated in Jos, Plateau state, Justice Shawomi Bokkos presided over a case that resulted in the sentencing of a 25-year-old man named Emmanuel Christopher. On Monday, May 8, the court reached a verdict, condemning Christopher to one month behind bars for the offense of stealing a sheep.

The prosecution, represented by Inspector Ibrahim Gokwat, presented their case, informing the court that the incident was reported to the Anglo-Jos police station on April 17 by the complainant, Samuel Elvis. According to Elvis, the accused trespassed onto his farm and made off with a sheep valued at N60,000. The prosecutor emphasized that during the course of the police investigation, the convicted individual admitted to the crime. This act of theft, as per the prosecutor, directly violated the Plateau State Penal Code law of Northern Nigeria.

Upon considering the evidence and the defendant’s plea, Judge Shawomi Bokkos pronounced the sentence. Christopher, having pleaded guilty to charges of both trespassing and theft, humbly implored the court for leniency. In response, the judge offered the convicted individual an alternative: pay a fine of N10,000 or serve a one-month jail term.
