In a stunning development in the Pakistani political landscape, former Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested by paramilitary officers outside a court in Islamabad on Monday, according to a statement from his party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The arrest reportedly took place as Khan was leaving the courthouse, where he had been appearing in connection with a case related to his alleged involvement in violent protests in the capital last year. PTI officials have condemned the arrest as a politically motivated move by the country’s authorities.
“Today, our leader and former Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested outside the court by paramilitary officers,” said a statement released by the PTI. “This is a clear attempt to silence the voice of opposition and suppress our democratic rights.”
Khan, who served as Pakistan’s prime minister from 2018 to 2021, has been a vocal critic of the country’s current government, led by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He has accused Sharif of corruption and nepotism, and has been a leading figure in the country’s opposition movement.

The arrest of Khan is likely to further escalate tensions between the ruling party and the opposition, which have been at loggerheads for months. The PTI has called for protests across the country in response to the arrest, raising fears of violence and unrest.
The Pakistani government has not yet released a statement on the matter.
