Impressive specifications and a novel interaction method for the Apple Vision Pro may help it overcome the VR curse
Apple Vision Pro, the company’s first spatial computer, was announced at WWDC 2023. The headset features impressive specs, including a high-resolution display, powerful processors, and a new way of interacting with the virtual world.
One of Vision Pro’s most amazing features is the display. It has two 9-inch panels with a combined resolution of 23 million pixels and a resolution of 3600×1920 for each eye. This has a resolution that is even higher than some high-end gaming displays and more than double that of the Oculus Quest 2.
For those who are interested in the technology, Apple also has retail locations that are ideal for a first-time virtual reality encounter. The Apple device requires extensive configuration, like as head scans and personalized lenses for people who wear spectacles.
Since 1968, when a professor at the University of Utah created the first 3D VR headgear, engineers have been daydreaming about virtual reality. Since then, some of the most powerful consumer electronics firms, including Nintendo, Microsoft, Meta, Google, and Sony, have developed headsets. None have been popular.

The processors in Vision Pro are also very powerful. The M2 chip provides the horsepower for the headset’s display, while the R1 chip handles sensor data and spatial audio. This combination of hardware should allow Vision Pro to deliver a smooth and immersive VR experience.
According CNBC.com, Apple’s at the table and virtual reality experts and developers say it has a chance to succeed where others haven’t.
“When people ask me what’s really special about this announcement, in one word, it’s Apple. The largest tech company in the world and also the most responsible,” said Ori Inbar, co-founder of Super Ventures and CEO of Augmented World Expo, an industry conference. “They always put everything behind every product they put out there. And that’s exactly the message they’re sending to the XR industry, but also to everyone else out there.”
Apple commercialized the success of multitouch displays with the iPhone, which transformed the smartphone industry by showing the world a new way to interact with phones. It may be able to replicate that in the VR industry with the Vision Pro’s gesture and voice-based user interface. Unlike other headsets, it doesn’t require a controller.
Apple Vision Pro is still in its early stages, but it has the potential to break the VR curse. If the headset is successful, it could usher in a new era of VR gaming and entertainment.

Apple even cited its track record with new computer interfaces as one of the arguments in favor of the viability of Vision Pro.
Apple probably has the most apps in development that could make use of the special features of a VR headset. The Vision Pro will enable iPhone and iPad apps at launch, and there are already millions of software developers in the industry.
Apple’s Vision Pro could eventually become less expensive than other computers, lighter and slimmer in future iterations, and a need like a smartphone.
