Banging Noise Heard In Search For Missing Submarine On Tour Of Titanic Wreckage
Five travelers on a sub that disappeared while en route to the Titanic wreckage were reportedly unable to escape after experiencing a “catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber,” according to the U.S. Coast Guard. The trip’s organizer, OceanGate, verified this on Thursday.
Rear Admiral John Mauger of the Coast Guard told reporters, “This is an incredibly unforgiving environment down there on the sea floor and the debris is consistent with a catastrophic implosion of the vessel.”
The billionaire explorer Hamish Harding revealed on Instagram on Saturday night that he was a member of the crew of a submersible boat traveling to the Titanic wreck to explore it.
“I am proud to finally announce that I joined OceanGate Expeditions for their RMS TITANIC Mission as a mission specialist on the sub going down to the Titanic,” Mr Harding wrote.
“Due to the worst winter in Newfoundland in 40 years, this mission is likely to be the first and only manned mission to the Titanic in 2023. A weather window has just opened up and we are going to attempt a dive tomorrow.”

On Sunday morning, the missing Titan Sub was deployed into the Atlantic from a Canadian research vessel. After an hour and a half, the ship lost touch with the Titan.
A limited supply of oxygen on board the sub, according to officials, may have lasted 96 hours, or roughly until Thursday morning.
The amount of oxygen still present is “a dialogue that’s happening,” according to Coast Guard Capt. Jamie Frederick on Wednesday, but it’s not the only factor being taken into account as the search goes on.
The statement from OceanGate that it believes the people on the company’s submersible drowned was described as “very sad to hear” by a representative for the Defense Department.
