President Biden Announces $42 Billion High-Speed Internet Initiative
The Biden administration declared that it had given more than $40 billion in funding to each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five territories in an effort to provide everyone in the country with dependable and inexpensive high-speed internet.
The amount that each state, territory, and Washington, D.C., will receive from the $42.5 billion program mostly depends on how many places within each jurisdiction are unserved, or don’t have access to internet speeds of at least 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload.
The largest financial portion ($3.3 billion) will go to Texas. 18 additional states will receive more than $1 billion in funding, including Alabama, California, Georgia, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Virginia, and Washington. Every state will get at least $107 million. The program covers several US territories, with $27 million going to the US Virgin Islands and $334 million going to Puerto Rico.
Officials from the White House linked the proposal to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1930s initiative to deliver power to rural America.
“Put simply, high-speed internet is a necessity in today’s society,” said Mitch Landrieu, White House infrastructure coordinator. “President Biden and Vice President Harris are committed to leaving no community behind as we connect everyone in America to high-speed internet.”

“With these allocations and other Biden administration investments, all 50 states, DC and the territories now have the resources to connect every resident and small business to reliable, affordable high-speed internet by 2030,” the White House said in a statement.
The initiative will provide funding to states, cities, and tribal governments to build new broadband networks and upgrade existing ones. Subsidies will also be made available to help low-income households pay for internet connection.
According to the strategy, millions of jobs should be produced in the IT and construction sectors. It is also projected to boost economic growth and productivity.
According to Biden, the program will “close the digital divide” and ensure that every American has access to the internet.
