You Are Barred From Strikes, Explore Negotiation - FG To NLC
In response to the Nigerian Labour Congress’ (NLC) threat to embark on a strike if the federal government fails to address the adverse effects of its economic policies leading to a rise in the cost of living, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Justice, B.E Jedy-Agba, expressed concern and emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law.
In a detailed statement issued by the Permanent Secretary, it was acknowledged that the issues at the heart of the NLC’s strike notice, namely the removal of fuel subsidy and the subsequent increase in petrol prices, were the same matters for which the NLC had sought legal action through the court system. The NLC, in its pursuit of justice, had engaged the services of the reputable law firm of Femi Falana, SAN, and thus, it was expected that the labor union would respect the jurisdiction of the courts and allow them to carry out their constitutional duties.
The Permanent Secretary expressed concern over the NLC’s intention to proceed with the strike, as it could be perceived as disregarding the court order that prohibits such actions. The court order was meant to prevent any form of self-help or disregard for legal processes, and the NLC’s proposed strike action might be seen as a challenge to the authority of the court.
Additionally, the statement highlighted that the NLC’s president had previously made derogatory remarks about the court, which had caused dismay among the legal community and raised questions about the NLC’s attitude towards the judicial system. Therefore, it was urged that the NLC leadership exhibit greater respect for the courts and the judicial process.
The government, as part of its ongoing efforts, was engaged in discussions with various stakeholders, including the NLC, to find ways to mitigate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal and petrol price increase on the populace. The government was keen to address the concerns of Nigerian workers and protect the nation’s economy, and it was hoped that the NLC would also actively participate in these negotiations rather than resorting to a strike action.
the Permanent Secretary reiterated that adherence to the rule of law was crucial for maintaining the country’s democratic principles and stability. Encouraging the NLC to pursue peaceful negotiations with the federal government, the statement emphasized that dialogue and cooperation would be more constructive in finding viable solutions to the economic challenges faced by the nation.
