Re: UITH Needs Urgent Attention

The Management of the University of llorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) on Tuesday dismissed claims that the hospital is in total darkness. Stating that it is a widely acknowledged fact that the erratic power supply as a result of the collapse of our national grid has not only affected services in the hospital but the country as a whole.

The responsive and responsible Management of the UITH, ably led by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. A.D. Yussuf had recently concluded an arrangement with the Power Holding Company for a dedicated power line that guarantees an uninterrupted power supply for 20 hours.
This is a testimony to the fact that the Management has never relented in working towards addressing challenges confronting the hospital.
The 20 hours electricity supply will commence fully by next week.
This will boost power supply to the mortuary, theatre, wards, units and other critical areas of the hospital.

This strategic arrangement was reached as a basement for alternative power supplies like;
Solar and Generating Plants to the health institution.
The fact that the mortuary wing of the hospital is on 24 hour services lend credence to the point being made on virile alternatives to electricity supply.

Consequently, the Management of the hospital has been frantically working to ensure that activities of the hospital are not grounded as result of this challenge. As an alternative to the erratic municipal power supply, the Management has continously been running on 10,000 litres of diesel to power all the electricity generating plants in the hospital which has significantly improved the electricity challenge at all service points in the hospital.

With improvement in electricity distribution, supply of water has gradually improved with the effective use of over 15 boreholes dug at strategic locations of the hospital with the hospital water tankers that offload water into the available water reservoirs serving as a backup to ensure services are not halted as a result of insufficient water supply.

On the alleged diversion of patients of the UITH by health workers to their private facilities, Management has commenced investigation into the matter and we can assure the general public that appropriate disciplinary measures shall be taken against any erring staff in line with the public service rules.

Rather than seeing the UITH as going down the drain, I want to say that the medical institution is waxing stronger by the day. This was attested to by the recent publication where UITH was ranked amongst the top 15 accredited healthcare institutions in Nigeria (2023).

We once again reiterate our commitment to the delivery of quality healthcare to our patients while we covet their unalloyed cooperation.

Head Corporate Affairs Unit (CAU)
