Ex-Barcelona star Dani Alves to face trial

Brazilian football legend Dani Alves finds himself entangled in a legal battle that could have severe implications on his personal and professional life. Reports reveal that the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star will be facing trial on s*xual assault charges in Spain, as informed by the high court of Catalonia to AFP on July 31.

The allegations against Alves stem from an incident that allegedly occurred in the bathroom of a nightclub in late December. A young woman has accused him of assault, leading to his detention in January. Since then, he has been held in custody without bail, with authorities citing concerns that he might attempt to flee the country.

Initially, when the news broke, Alves denied any knowledge of the woman in question during a television interview. However, his stance changed during questioning by investigators after his arrest. He asserted that the encounter was consensual, claiming his innocence in an interview published in June. In his first statement since the arrest, Alves spoke to the daily newspaper La Vanguardia, maintaining a “clear conscience” regarding the incident at the VIP area of the Sutton nightclub.

The football star admitted to initially lying about the situation because he feared his wife’s reaction, as he was afraid she would leave him if she found out about his involvement with another woman. At the time of the alleged incident, Alves was on holiday in Barcelona after representing Brazil at the World Cup in Qatar.

As the legal proceedings progress, the court has not yet set a date for the trial, leaving Alves and his supporters in suspense. If found guilty, the Brazilian defender could face up to 12 years in jail, significantly impacting his highly successful career.

Throughout his illustrious career, Alves has earned an impressive 42 football titles, including three Champions League triumphs with Barcelona and two Copa America victories with Brazil. However, the cloud of uncertainty surrounding his legal situation has already taken its toll on his professional life, as he was dismissed by his Mexican club Pumas UNAM following his arrest.
