Hacking group allegedly stole 6 terabytes of data from MGM, Caesars

On September 14, 2023, a hacking group known as Scattered Spider claimed to have stolen 6 terabytes of data from the American gambling and hospitality company MGM Resorts International. The group said that the data included customer information, employee records, and financial data.

Speaking to Reuters via the messaging platform Telegram, a representative for the group said it did not plan to make the data public, and declined to comment on whether it had asked the companies for ransom. “If MGM wish to release that information they will. We do not do that,” the person said.

The group’s contact was provided to Reuters by a cybersecurity expert who runs an online repository of malware samples called “vx-underground”, and declined to be named.

Caesars Entertainment has recently uncovered what appears to be suspicious activity on its IT network. According to a Form 8K filed, this social engineering attack took place on an outsourced IT provider that is employed by the hotel company.

Scattered Spider said that it did not plan to release the data publicly, but that it might sell it to the highest bidder. The group also said that it was willing to negotiate with MGM Resorts International to resolve the issue.

MGM Resorts International has confirmed that it was the victim of a data breach. The company said that it is investigating the breach and that it is working with law enforcement to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

The data breach at MGM Resorts International is a reminder of the risks associated with storing data online. Companies need to take steps to protect their data from hackers and other cybercriminals.
