NLC Declares Nationwide Indefinite Strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have called a national strike beginning October 3, 2023.

This follows what the Labour Unions described as the government’s “failure” to properly execute programs to ameliorate Nigerians’ miseries following the elimination of the Premium Motor Spirit subsidy.

During a virtual National Executive Council meeting held via Zoom on Tuesday, NLC national president Joe Ajaero informed members that a meeting was held with TUC leaders to discuss next steps.

Ajaero stated that the two centers agreed to work together to make their position known to the administration.

“Initially some members did not want us to work with the TUC but as of now, we don’t have a choice. The government has not been proactive. So it is going to be a definite action this time around.”

The NLC’s 21-day ultimatum expired last week.

Joe Ajaero, the NLC’s national president, had claimed that “none of the demands put before the Federal Government had been addressed.”

On September 5 and 6, the union held a two-day countrywide warning strike to demonstrate its preparation for the indefinite strike later that month.

The NLC and TUC are calling for salary increases, palliative care, tax breaks and allowances for public sector workers, and a reassessment of the minimum wage, among other things.
