PDP Scribe Expresses Sadness as Residents Face Live-Threatening Flood in Kwara

Sympathises with the affected families

My thoughts and prayers are with the people of the Adeta-Pakata area and some other places in the Ilorin metropolis whose houses and properties worth Millions of Naira were flooded as a result of the recent downpour.

We also got the report that a little boy was drowned as a result of this flooding around the Okefoma-Adabiyah area of Ilorin but rescued with the help of the good people of the community. This is very sad and devastating. I offer my deepest condolences to the affected families.

This is a difficult time for these people as many were caught unaware and so devastating that they were not been able to sleep in their various houses last night.

Eyewitness reports indicated this flooding was caused by the wrong road designs as a result of the covering of drainages by Gov Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq. The drainages were constructed by past administrations to allow easy passage of flood before the present Administration resulted in deceiving Kwarans with substandard cosmetic projects by covering the drainages, and painting the roads, and its kerbs in the buildup of 2023 general elections.

I have always emphasized that in a society where there is effective governance, a government would constitute an effective planning and design system and institutionalize a statutory Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and other safety measures to ensure that the safety of the people is prioritised and guaranteed before projects are approved and implemented.

This unfortunate incident would have been avoidable if the government in Kwara under Mall Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq truly understood what sustainable development is and was committed to approaching development with the best professional ethics and standards required to achieve the purpose of project designs at all times.

Unfortunately, the elected Governor, under whose custody lies our resources to provide instant response in this kind of trauma seems no more living in Kwara and has not yielded to public outcries that have been calling him to return home and face business of governance that is suffering serious negligence since his partial relocation to Abuja.

On my part as a prominent member of the leading opposition party in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), I will continue to appeal to His Excellency to listen to people’s yearning and make Kwara his priority to avoid the collapse of governance in the state.

Apart from the fact that an urgent measure should be put in place to forestall the future reoccurrence of such catastrophic incidents, the people affected also need urgent government attention in the form of temporary succour that will enable them to navigate this odd time.
