A man charged with the murder of teacher Kirsten Kluyts is due to appear in court today for a bail application. While details of the case and the specific allegations against the accused remain under seal to protect the integrity of the investigation and ensure a fair trial, the upcoming hearing marks a significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings.
In relation to Kluyts’ death, the 21-year-old Varsity College student is accused of premeditated murder, rape, and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
On October 29, 2023, Kluyts, a teacher at Delta Park High School, was attacked in Sandton during the MyRun event.
Hours after her abduction, her body was discovered in Parkmore’s George Lea Park.
On the final occasion, Itumeleng Masako, Mahungela’s recently appointed attorney, spoke outside of court. He said that his client insisted that he discovered Kluyts dead and that they will contest the State’s poor case against him.
“We’re going to ask for equal justice and sympathy from this court in our bail application.”
The items taken from the victim included her running shoes, sunglasses, blue T-shirt, jeans, and pink cap.
While legal proceedings continue, it is important to remember and honor the life of Kirsten Kluyts. Sharing memories of her positive impact on students and colleagues can serve as a powerful tribute and keep her light shining brightly.
