Charges have been brought against a South Mecklenburg High School teacher for allegedly having affair with a pupil. The allegations have caused a stir in the school community and sparked worries about the safety of the students.
Prosecutors stated in court on Thursday that the student’s mother had caught 26-year-old Gabriela Cartaya-Neufeld and an 18-year-old male student in the act on Wednesday in Park Road Park. The park is situated at Charlotte’s south side.
The investigation began after the student’s mother reportedly noticed suspicious activity on her son’s location tracking app. She confronted her son, who then revealed the details of the alleged relationship. The mother immediately contacted police, leading to Cartaya-Neufeld’s arrest.
“We take this matter seriously,” said Marc Angerer, Principal of South Mecklenburg High School, in a statement released to families. “The safety and security of our students and staff is of the utmost importance to us all, and while this is a troubling situation, it is being managed by law enforcement.”
Citing court records, WNCT-TV reported that Cartaya-Neufeld was released the next day on a $75,000 secured bond.
