Addressing the plight of basic education teachers in Kwara for the sake of our children’s future

A crisis is unfolding in the heart of Kwara’s educational system, but a large number of us aren’t paying attention to it. As we shape the minds of our future leaders, we cannot afford to neglect the cornerstone of our educational foundation – our dedicated basic education teachers. These unsung heroes work tirelessly, shaping young minds, and nurturing the dreams of our children. Their selfless dedication deserves our attention and support.

With unwavering dedication and sense of duty, several teachers travel miles to rural areas, facing challenging terrain, harsh weather conditions, and time away from their loved ones. Without extra pay or compensation, they brave these hardships to educate and shape the minds of our future generations. Their selfless commitment is a testament to their devotion to service.

Yet, these dedicated teachers are left to struggle, with meager salaries that barely cover their basic needs. No allowances, no motivation, no support. Just a mere push for results, without regard for their well-being. How then can we expect these teachers to inspire, to motivate, and to educate our children when they themselves lack motivation and are struggling to survive? The truth is, we should not expect much from them.

We must face the harsh truth: poor teacher welfare is a ticking time bomb, jeopardizing the foundation of our education system. This cycle of neglect fosters poor performance, condemning our children to a future of mediocrity. It is, therefore, imperative for the state government, to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of this set of teachers. The government needs to see their struggles, hear their pleas, and respond with empathy and urgency. It’s time to prioritize their well-being, for the sake of our children’s future and the prosperity of our nation.

It is crucial that the government work to increase teacher salaries and other allowances to a living wage, provide them necessary allowances and benefits, create a supportive work environment, and offer regular training and personal development opportunities.

Let us invest in our teachers, and through them, in our children. For the future of Kwara State depends on it.

We owe it to ourselves, our children, and the future of our great state to act now. Let us rise to the challenge, and give our teachers the welfare they deserve.

The time for change is now. Let us make it happen, together.

The current economic climate in Nigeria has exacerbated the financial struggles of teachers, who have long been subjected to meager remuneration. Despite the National Assembly’s passage of the minimum wage bill, its implementation remains ineffective, leaving workers’ welfare at the mercy of administrators across various industries.

The newly introduced minimum wage, though a constitutional law, falls short of providing a decent standard of living for teachers, considering the prevailing high inflation rate. The purchasing power of the minimum wage is severely diminished, rendering it inadequate to address the basic needs of workers.

To address this, we advocate for:

1.A genuine implementation of the new minimum wage with payment dated back to the month of May, 2024, to adjust a bit if not totally reflect the current economic realities and inflation rate.

2.Enhanced budgetary allocation for education to ensure adequate funding for teachers’ salaries and other accrued benefits.

3.Effective implementation and monitoring of the minimum wage law to prevent exploitation.

We owe it to ourselves, our children, and the future of Kwara State to act now. The time for change is now. Let us make it happen, together.

The fate of our state hangs in the balance. We either choose to neglect our teachers, or will we choose to invest in our future. The choice is ours as a government and as a people.

Thank you!
