PDP Pledges to Restore Economic Growth in Kwara, Criticizes “Oppressive Walls” Policy

January 13, 2025

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has strongly condemned the recent decision by the Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq-led APC government to erect walls around key business hubs in the Ilorin metropolis, including Challenge, Unity, and Post Office areas. The party described the action as an act of economic sabotage targeting the livelihoods of the state’s enterprising youth and struggling masses.

In a press statement signed by the State Chairman, Rt. Hon. Babatunde Mohammed, the PDP labeled the move as “draconian” and vowed to reverse it if elected to power in 2027. The party expressed solidarity with the affected business owners and youth, assuring them that a PDP-led government would prioritize the removal of the walls to restore access and opportunities for businesses to thrive.

Concerns for Local Economy

The PDP highlighted the adverse impact of the policy on young entrepreneurs and small business owners operating in these areas, which are vital economic hubs in Ilorin. The statement criticized the administration for its lack of empathy, noting that the decision ignored the investments, loans, and hard work of these business owners.

“Denying people access to their places of livelihood is not only callous but also an act of despotic recklessness,” the statement read. The PDP further accused Governor Abdulrazaq of enacting a policy that undermines the local economy and exacerbates poverty.

Call for Action

The party urged security agencies to act responsibly, ensuring the safety and rights of protesting youth entrepreneurs while advising the governor to reconsider the policy to prevent further escalation of tensions.

The PDP also called on the youth to maintain peaceful protests and avoid actions that could be exploited by the current administration.

A Vision for 2027

As part of its commitment to the #RescueKwara initiative, the PDP promised that, if elected, it would dismantle all structures and policies that suppress economic growth and harm the livelihoods of the people.

“We urge all well-meaning Kwarans to join hands with us in restoring responsible governance in 2027,” the statement concluded.
