Ilorin Challenge Fire: Traders Blame State Govt Policies, Seek Urgent Help

The recent Challenge fire incident in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, has left a trail of destruction and despair, with victims expressing deep disappointment and frustration over the state government’s perceived insensitivity and misplacement of priority.

Former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has extended his sympathies to the victims, condemning the incident and assuring them of his support. A high-powered delegation led by Alhaji Isiaka Owolabi, PDP Kwara Central Senatorial Chairman, and Mallam Abdulrahman Abdullahi Kayode, PDP State Secretary, visited the scene, meeting with affected shop owners and traders.

The delegation was received by Mallam Ibrahim Ajadi Garba, Chairman of the Challenge Association of Traders and Telecommunication, who narrated the ordeal of the victims. The shop owners estimated losses worth N250 million and appealed for assistance from individuals, corporate bodies, and well-meaning Nigerians to revive their businesses.

“We are struggling to survive, and the government’s actions seem to be suffocating us,” said one of the shop owners. “The erection of fences around the market has restricted access, hindering firefighting efforts and exacerbating the situation. We urge the government to reconsider its policies and provide support to affected traders.”

Alhaji Isiaka Owolabi conveyed Dr. Saraki’s message of hope and support to the victims. “Dr. Saraki would have been here himself if he were in town, but he has asked us to come in his name and assure you of his support,” he said. “He is committed to ensuring that the PDP prioritizes the needs of its citizens, particularly in times of crisis.”

The delegation, which included notable PDP leaders such as Alhaji Musa Abdullahi, Alhaji Taju Alabi, State Woman Leader of the Party, Alhaja Segilola Abdulkadir, and former Chairman Local Government Service Commission, Hajia Sarat Ibrahim Adebayo, among other dignitaries, was warmly received by the market leaders and shop owners.

“The PDP is committed to advocating for the interests of the people,” Alhaji Isiaka Owolabi emphasized. “We will work tirelessly to ensure that a PDP government prioritizes the needs of its citizens at all times.”

The visit highlights growing concerns about the state government’s response to the needs of its citizens, particularly in the face of crises like the Challenge fire incident. The PDP’s gesture has brought hope to the victims, who are counting on the government and well-meaning individuals to help them rebuild their lives and businesses.
