‘Dead’ woman found alive inside coffin at wake has died one week later

Previously discovered to be alive in a coffin during her own wake, the woman from Ecuador has since gone away.

Gilbert Barberán, the woman’s son, reports that Bella Montoya, 76, passed away on Friday after being hospitalized for a week in critical care in the seaside city of Babahoyo.

When Montoya was discovered alive after beating on her own coffin at the wake in Babahoyo, she was swiftly sent to the Martin Icaza General Hospital.

According to a statement from the ministry, the retired nurse passed away following an ischemic stroke while she was under “permanent surveillance” in the ICU.

When Montoya apparently experienced cardiorespiratory arrest on June 9, hospital staff initially declared her dead.

She was dead for nearly five hours before she woke up in the middle of her wake, surprising the mourners assembled in the city of Babahoyo.

The woman is removed from the coffin as she struggles for oxygen in the heartbreaking video from the vigil.

She was then taken to the hospital where she had initially been pronounced dead.

Montoya’s remains will now be sent back to the funeral home where she was discovered moving around in her casket. According to her son, she will be interred at a public cemetery.

A technical committee was established to look into the hospital’s surprising error in how it reports deaths and provides death certificates.
