On Friday, the owner of the Wagner private military contractor issued his most direct threat to the Kremlin yet by urging an armed uprising to remove Russia’s defense minister. As soon as they heard about it, the security services demanded Yevgeny Prigozhin’s arrest.
Yevgeny Prigozhin of Wagner has been charged with armed mutiny by Russia’s FSB security service after the mercenary leader claimed that the Russian military was targeting his soldiers and pledged to “destroy” his rivals.
President Vladimir Putin appeared to be facing the worst internal crisis since he authorized a full-scale invasion of Ukraine during the stalemate, many of whose details remained unclear.
The Wagner Group’s CEO, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has been accused of an attempted takeover by Russian authorities, who have initiated a criminal investigation and asked for his arrest.
Prigozhin asserted in the early hours of Saturday that his soldiers had entered Russia from Ukraine and were in Rostov.
“But we will destroy anyone who stands in our way,” he said in one of a series of angry video and audio recordings posted on social media beginning late Friday. “We are moving forward and will go until the end.”
Senior Russian officer Gen. Sergey Surovikin, who has connections to Prigozhin, issued a video speech urging Wagner fighters to put an end to their uprising and turn around.
Between September of last year until January, Surovikin served as the principal commander of Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine.
According to Prigozhin, Gerasimov gave the order to attack Wagner field camps in Ukraine with rockets, helicopter gunships, and artillery fire after consulting with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and deciding to eliminate Wagner.
Late on Friday, Prigozhin warned against resistance from the army and threatened to use armed force to punish Shoigu.
