Rapper “Big Pokey,” 45, was on stage at the Pour09 Bar during a Juneteenth-themed event. His real name was Milton Powell. He ‘dies unexpectedly’ in the middle of the act.
Another Houston rapper named Bun B announced Big Pokey’s passing on Instagram and described him as “one of the pillars of our city.”
Jefferson County Justice of the Peace Precinct 8 Judge Tom Gillam III said Powell was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, where he was later pronounced dead, KBMT reported. A cause of death has not been given pending results of an autopsy.
Powell was a member of Screwed Up Click, a group of Houston-based rappers that included the late DJ Screw, the Chronicle reported.
Pour09 posted an update Sunday morning on Facebook to send “prayers to Big Pokey and his family.”
“Out of respect for those involved we will not be commengint on the incident to allow his family and friends ample time to mourn and make a statement when they are ready,” they shared. “This is a tragedy that no one expect and only our prayers go out to his family and friends.”
As the family awaits the findings of the autopsy, the cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
