Kansas City cop kneels on customer’s neck over lack of receipt for frozen $5 pizza

Social media users have been sharing a video of a police encounter with a Walmart customer over a $5 pizza.

On June 1, Borisouth paid for a pizza at a Walmart self-checkout station in Kansas City.

In the video, Dayton Borisouth can be heard asking the officer to let him see the receipts he had for the pizza’s multiple purchases.

Social media outcry over this has led to discussions concerning the use of force by police personnel.

Borisouth told USA TODAY his uncle had called him from the Walmart asking for a hand jump-starting his car, which had died in the parking lot. Borisouth, who remodels houses for a living, had just gotten off of work and was shirtless due to the hot weather, a detail he believes played a role in the officers’ decision to approach him. While waiting for the car to start back up, Borisouth decided to run inside the store and grab a frozen pizza to take home to his family for dinner.

“I thought I’d be out quick, just in and out. That’s why I didn’t care that my shirt was off,” said Borisouth. “I went inside, got the frozen pizza, called my wife and said ‘hey, don’t cook dinner, I’m purchasing this pizza right now.’”

“[The officer] said, ‘Got your receipt?’” Borisouth recounted. “And I answered. I said, ‘Yes.’ And then I just kept walking.”

“I shook my head no, and said, ‘Stop chasing me. You don’t have the right to detain me. I didn’t break any laws,’ and then he pinned me in the corner where the claw machine was,” Borisouth continued.

“I cleared it up with him immediately,” he said. “I was like, ‘I have one weapon on me. And it’s not a weapon.’ I was like, ‘It’s my work blade and I do not intend to use it.’ I let him know that immediately.”
