The hydroelectric Nova Kakhovka dam on the Dnipro River in southern Ukraine has been blown.
Kherson is located 30 kilometers to the east of the Nova Kakhovka dam on the Dnipro River. For the neighborhood and Ukraine’s larger war effort, its destruction would have a number of major effects.
Since the start of the invasion of Ukraine in February, the dam has served as a crucial supply route for Russian forces positioned on the river’s right bank. Only three important crossings of the Dnipro exist, all of which are in the Kherson region.
The massive Dnieper River in Ukraine is blocked off by the dam, creating a sizable water reservoir. The actual dam is hundreds of meters broad and 30 meters tall. As a component of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power project, it was constructed in 1956.
Zelenskiy said “destroying the dam would mean a large-scale disaster,” and compared such an act to the use of weapons of mass destruction.
Ukraine military intelligence said “the scale of the ecological disaster [would] go far beyond the borders of Ukraine and affect the entire Black Sea region”.

The Ukrainian government has demanded that residents of the downstream area leave because of impending catastrophic floods and has accused Russia of blowing up the Nova Kakhovka dam on the Dnieper River.
The hydropower facility at Kakhovka benefits from it as well. After Russia spent weeks earlier this year targeting crucial infrastructure, the destruction of the dam would exacerbate Ukraine’s current energy issues.
Sergei Surovikin, the military commander for Russia in Ukraine, reportedly claimed in October of last year that Kyiv was preparing a “massive missile strike,” according to media sources. Russia has repeatedly accused Ukraine of assaulting the dam.
In the video, a sizeable amount of water is seen freely flowing through the split in half Kakhovka dam and power plant. The factory and dam, which are situated on the Dnipro River close to the city of Kherson, were taken over by Russia last year
Speaking to the Reuters news agency, locals said that the water-level had begun to rise in April, sometimes by up to 30 cm a day, and had remained elevated since.
