The trip’s organizer, OceanGate, confirmed on Thursday that five passengers on a sub that vanished while traveling to the Titanic wreckage did not escape after suffering a “catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber,” according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Rear Admiral John Mauger of the Coast Guard told reporters, “This is an incredibly unforgiving environment down there on the sea floor and the debris is consistent with a catastrophic implosion of the vessel.”
The billionaire explorer Hamish Harding revealed on Instagram on Saturday night that he was a member of the crew of a submersible boat traveling to the Titanic wreck to explore it.
“I am proud to finally announce that I joined OceanGate Expeditions for their RMS TITANIC Mission as a mission specialist on the sub going down to the Titanic,” Mr Harding wrote.
“Due to the worst winter in Newfoundland in 40 years, this mission is likely to be the first and only manned mission to the Titanic in 2023. A weather window has just opened up and we are going to attempt a dive tomorrow.”
The statement from OceanGate that it believes the people on the company’s submersible drowned was described as “very sad to hear” by a representative for the Defense Department.
“On behalf of the United States Coast Guard and the entire unified command, I offer my deepest condolences to the families,” Mauger said. “I can only imagine what this has been like for them, and I hope that this discovery provides some solace during this difficult time.”
