The five passengers’ Titan submarine, which is still missing, has only a few hours’ worth of oxygen left.

The fate of the five men within may depend on one crew member, a very skilled mariner from France by the name of Paul-Henri Nargeolet, if the submersible that is currently missing in the chilly waters of the North Atlantic is still intact.

The five crew members’ conditions and the precise location of the Titanic submarine are unclear. The vessel may only have ten hours or fewer of oxygen left, making it urgent to locate the sub before it is too late.

With a 96-hour oxygen supply, the OceanGate Expeditions-operated 21-foot deep-sea yacht lost communication around an hour and 45 minutes after diving on Sunday morning. Thursday morning is when that oxygen is expected to run out.

The Titan could be raised to the surface using a unique deep-water salvage equipment that the U.S. Navy reported had arrived in St. John’s, Canada early on Wednesday afternoon. However, the device might not be ready for another 24 hours. Titan is 20,000 pounds in weight.

According to BBC.com, Dr Ken Ledez, a hyperbaric medicine expert at Memorial University in St John’s, Newfoundland, has told BBC News that running out of air is not the only danger those on board face.

The vessel may have lost electrical power, which is likely to have a role in controlling the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide inside the vessel.

As the oxygen level falls, the proportion of carbon dioxide being breathed out by the crew will be rising, with potentially fatal consequences.

“As levels of carbon dioxide build up, then it becomes sedative, it becomes like an anaesthetic gas, and you will go to sleep.”

“The equipment that is onsite and coming is the most sophisticated in the world and certainly capable of reaching those depths,” said Sean Leet, chief executive of Horizon Maritime, a Canadian company that co-owns the research vessel that launched the Titan.

Paul-Henry Nargeolet, Sulaiman Dawood, Shahzada Dawood, and Stockton Rush all disappeared with the Titan submarine  during the $250K ticket submersible Titanic tour.
