Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor Godwin Emefiele collapsed in court on Thursday, August 17, 2023, while facing charges of alleged money laundering.

Emefiele, a candidate for president of Nigeria, unexpectedly became unwell while testifying before a federal high court in Abuja. He was taken urgently to the hospital, where his status appears as stable.

Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, attorney for the Federal Government and director of public prosecution for the Federation, informed Justice Hamza Muazu that Mrs. Saadat Yaro became ill in the morning, which is why she was absent.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Akinlolu Kehinde, who represented Emefiele, did not object to the motion for an adjournment.

The charges against Emefiele were filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The EFCC alleges that Emefiele used his position as CBN governor to launder N50 billion.

Emefiele has denied the charges and filed a motion to quash the case.

In 2017, he was hospitalized for a brief illness. And in 2020, he was forced to cancel a trip to the United States after he tested positive for COVID-19.

It is unclear what caused Emefiele to collapse in court on Thursday. However, his lawyers said that he is in good spirits and is expected to make a full recovery.
