Trump indicted by special counsel Jack Smith over bid to overturn 2020 election

As of August 1st, there are reports that former President Donald Trump has been indicted by special counsel Jack Smith. He is facing four counts related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.

According to Smith, the 77-year-old former president allegedly pursued unlawful means to discount legitimate votes and undermine the election results in an effort to retain power after his defeat to Joe Biden.

The prosecutors led by Jack Smith claim that Trump’s persistent claims of election fraud, which he said cost him re-election, were false, and he knew they were false. Despite this knowledge, Trump repeatedly and widely disseminated these claims to make them appear legitimate, creating a national atmosphere of mistrust and anger, and eroding public faith in the election administration.

This indictment would be the second one brought by Jack Smith against Trump. Currently, Trump is already facing 40 federal counts related to allegations that he hoarded national security documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

The grand jury, which is investigating Trump’s actions, recently met for several hours at the federal courthouse in Washington, DC. The indictment was handed down after the meeting concluded.
