Maersk unveils world’s first bio-methanol container ship

Danish shipping giant Maersk on Thursday unveiled the world’s first container ship running on bio-methanol, a key step in its effort to lower its huge carbon footprint.

Laura is a relatively small type that can move 2,136 20-foot (TEU) containers. It was built in South Korea by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and has a dual-fuel engine.

According to Maersk, the Laura will aid in a 100-ton per day reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the same ship operating on fuel oil.

Bio-methanol is a clean-burning fuel that is produced from renewable sources, such as waste biomass and captured carbon dioxide. It is a significant improvement over traditional marine fuels, such as heavy fuel oil and bunker fuel, which produce high levels of greenhouse gas emissions.

“It’s a really symbolic day of our energy transition, really becoming a reality, something concrete that we can actually demonstrate, not just commitments and hard work, but actually something that everybody can see,” Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc told CNBC.

This is “the first step for us. But it’s the first step for the industry as well. The ship was ordered only in 2021, and she was really the first of its kind. Today, just a couple of years later, we have 125 ships that have been ordered by different companies to actually work on the same technology and the same energy transition. So this ship is really a trendsetter for a whole industry,” Clerc said.

By the year 2040, Maersk wants to be carbon neutral. 25 methanol-fueled vessels have been ordered by the company in total; delivery is anticipated in 2025. Maersk anticipates being able to cut its yearly carbon dioxide emissions by about 2.3 million tonnes once these vessels are put into service.

Considering that the shipping sector contributes about 3% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, the introduction of Laura is a significant development. By investing in bio-methanol, Maersk is demonstrating its commitment to minimizing its environmental impact.
