Palestinian fighters were reported to have infiltrated areas of southern Israel as a barrage of rockets was launched from the Gaza Strip. The rockets killed at least one woman and injured 15 others, according to Israeli medical workers.
Several positions in Gaza started firing rockets at the same time on Saturday at 06:30 local time (03:30 GMT), according to the Agence France-Presse news agency. The rocket barrage lasted for over 30 minutes.
According to the Israeli military, it responded by carrying out airstrikes on targets in Gaza and was looking into claims of Palestinian fighters sneaking into Israel. Which Palestinian organization launched the missile assaults or carried out the infiltration was unclear.
“A number of terrorists have infiltrated into Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip,” the military said in a statement, adding that residents in the area surrounding the Gaza Strip had been told to stay in their homes.
“The Israel Defence Forces will defend Israeli civilians and the Hamas terrorist organisation will pay heavy price for its actions,” it said.
The escalation in violence came after weeks of heightened tensions along Israel’s volatile border with Gaza. In recent months, there have been a number of clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants, as well as an increase in rocket attacks from Gaza.
CNN reported statement made by Hamas military commander Muhammad Al-Deif said in a recorded message. “If you have a gun, get it out. This is the time to use it – get out with trucks, cars, axes, today the best and most honorable history starts,”
“We warned the enemy not to continue his aggression against the al-Aqsa mosque … The age of the enemy’s aggression without a response is over. I call on Palestinians everywhere in the West Bank and within the Green Line to launch an attack without restraint. Go to all the streets. I call on Muslims everywhere to launch an attack,” he said.
Initial unconfirmed reports, vivid images, and videos gave the impression that shooters had opened fire in the border town of Sderot, killing a number of Israeli soldiers and civilians. Doctors pronounced a senior woman deceased under mysterious circumstances, and rocket fire also claimed the lives of another four people.
