In a surprise attack on Israel on Saturday that included border crossing gunmen and a hefty volley of rockets fired from the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas launched the worst assault against Israel in years.
Videos shared on social media purported to show armed Palestinians entering the Israeli border town of Sderot wearing uniforms. An furious mob was shown trampling on what appeared to be the lifeless body of an Israeli soldier in a video from Gaza while yelling “God is Great.” In another video, it appeared that Palestinian insurgents were pulling an Israeli soldier who was still alive away on a motorcycle. In other videos, a group of Palestinian males could be seen dancing around and on a burning Israeli tank. The videos’ veracity could not be readily confirmed.
CNN reported statement made by Hamas military commander Muhammad Al-Deif said in a recorded message. “If you have a gun, get it out. This is the time to use it – get out with trucks, cars, axes, today the best and most honorable history starts,”
“We warned the enemy not to continue his aggression against the al-Aqsa mosque … The age of the enemy’s aggression without a response is over. I call on Palestinians everywhere in the West Bank and within the Green Line to launch an attack without restraint. Go to all the streets. I call on Muslims everywhere to launch an attack,” he said.
The Israeli military acknowledged that there had been an infiltration at a number of areas close to the Gaza border in southern Israel. Residents were told to stay inside.
“The military declares a state of war alert,” it said in a statement. “In the last hour, the Hamas terrorist organization had begun a massive shooting of rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory, and terrorists infiltrated into Israeli territory in a number of different locations.”
