GM Set To Invest $920 million in Ohio diesel engine Factory

On June 20, 2023, General Motors (GM) declared that it would spend $920 million to upgrade its diesel engine factory in Brookville, Ohio.

In order to support the manufacture of the next-generation ICE, GM announced in June investments totaling more than $3.2 billion.

This month, GM also revealed its plans to invest more than $1 billion to retool two manufacturing facilities in Flint, Michigan, in order to get ready for the next generation of its ICE heavy-duty trucks, as well as more than $500 million to upgrade its assembly plant in Arlington, Texas, in order to get ready for the production of the ICE full-size SUVs.

The facility, which now manufactures Duramax diesel engines for the Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD pickup trucks, will more than quadruple in size as a result of the investment.

In addition to other powertrain components, the new plant will be able to manufacture heavy-duty truck engines of the next generation.

GM CEO Mary Barra said that the investment in the Ohio plant “demonstrates our commitment to the future of diesel.”

“Diesel engines will continue to play an important role in our portfolio for years to come,” Barra said.

The investment is expected to create 700 new jobs at the Brookville plant.

The announcement was welcomed by local officials, who said that the investment would boost the local economy.

“This is a great day for Brookville and for Ohio,” said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine.

“This investment will create good-paying jobs and help to grow our economy.”

Like other automakers, GM must comply with California’s and the US EPA’s increasingly strict emissions regulations.

The expansion of the Brookville plant is a sign that GM is committed to the future of diesel engines, even as the company transitions to electric vehicles.

The investment will help to ensure that GM can continue to meet the demand for diesel engines in the heavy-duty truck market.
