Today’s big gas explosion in a Parisian building housing an American fashion academy left at least 29 people hurt, four of whom were in serious condition, and two others unaccounted for.

Locals were cited by several French media outlets as saying there had been a loud explosion earlier.

Meanwhile, French prosecutors claimed that the explosion’s cause was still unknown.

People stood around in the immediate aftermath, seeming shocked by the magnitude of the explosion at around 5 p.m. local time (4 p.m. GMT), as debris littered the street.
According to the police, several of the injured were struck by both the blast’s force and flying debris. On Wednesday night, search and rescue personnel were hunting for two persons in the debris.

After a building’s facade collapsed and the fire appeared to have spread to nearby structures, police advised people to stay away from the Val-de-Grâce neighborhood, which is close to the Pantheon and Luxembourg Gardens.

There were ambulance services, police, and firefighters on the site. The prosecutor in Paris stated that it was not yet possible to identify the fire’s origin.

Police said that the fire was under control and that rescue efforts were underway at around 6.45 p.m. local time.

According to Dailymail.co.uk, Laure Beccuau, the Paris prosecutor said at the scene: ‘Camera footage suggests the main blast was in a building which hosts the Paris American Academy.

She said the rubble was still being searched, but the initial toll was four people in a ‘critical condition’ and ‘16 others badly injured’.

The academy is on the Rue St Jacques and describes itself as ‘Paris’s number one bilingual design school situated in the heart of the Latin Quarter.’
