Wagner PMC fighters are said to have started withdrawing from Rostov. Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the mercenaries, announced on Saturday that he had directed his troops to retreat and return to their bases, seemingly abandoning an armed uprising that had them moving on Moscow. Prigozhin claimed in a post on Telegram that the action was taken to prevent bloodshed.

This is the official statement from Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner group and the leader of this coup.

“They were going to dismantle PMC Wagner. We came out on 23 June to the March of Justice. In a day, we walked to nearly 200km away from Moscow. In this time, we did not spill a single drop of blood of our fighters. Now, the moment has come when blood may spill. That’s why, understanding the responsibility for spilling Russian blood on one of the sides, we are turning back our convoys and going back to field camps according to the plan.”

Prigozhin promised to stop moving his troops and go back to his posts after accepting the terms of Lukashenko’s deal.

The arrangement also provides security for PMC Wagner fighters.

It appears that the coup attempt has failed, and Prigozhin and his soldiers will head back to their bases.

Mr. Prigozhin did not say whether his forces were leaving the southern city of Rostov-on-Don, a Russian military hub he has seized earlier in the day.

In an audio statement published on Telegram, Mr. Prigozhin said that his soldiers had come to within 200 kilometers, or around 125 miles, of Moscow and had done so without any fighting deaths.
