Video: Saraki Receives Football Legend Kanu Nwankwo, Hails His Impact on Nigerian Football
Former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has hosted Nigerian football icon and former Super Eagles captain, Nwankwo Kanu, describing him as a living legend whose influence shaped generations of the nation’s football history.
Saraki made this known after welcoming Kanu—popularly known as Papilo—to his office for discussions centred on football and sports development in Nigeria.
He praised Kanu’s exceptional playmaking skills and leadership on the field, noting that his contributions went beyond trophies to inspire countless young Nigerians to pursue football professionally.
“Kanu Nwankwo is a living legend of Nigerian football. His brilliance and leadership helped shape an entire generation of our national sport,” Saraki said.
The former Arsenal and Inter Milan star remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated footballers, having enjoyed a distinguished club career in Europe and captained the Super Eagles to major international successes.
Saraki also highlighted Kanu’s time at Arsenal Football Club, where he was part of one of the club’s most iconic eras in the English Premier League, further cementing his global legacy.
Reflecting on the meeting, Saraki admitted that hosting the football great rekindled his admiration as a fan.
“Welcoming Kanu to my office to talk about football reminded me once again why he is so respected—on and off the pitch,” he added.
Kanu Nwankwo continues to play an active role in sports development and humanitarian work in Nigeria through football advocacy and youth empowerment initiatives.
