Tragic events have occurred in the Nkerefi community in Enugu State’s Nkanu East Local Government Area when one of the laborers engaged to work in the field killed four female farmers.
According to BBC News Igbo, the incident happened on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, while the women and others were working in their farms.
It was gathered that the killer labourer was among the three young men hired from Ezza in Ebonyi State to work in a rice farm by a woman in the village.
The three young guys were busy working at the section they were employed for, while the woman and dozens of others were working in their various farms, it was discovered.
A villager named David Ani claims that problems began when the woman who hired the workers provided them food at noon so they could eat and rest before continuing their work.
“The murdering laborer excused himself to go the restroom after the three guys had finished eating. But because the man lingered in the woods for more than 30 minutes, his coworkers began to wonder if he had gone there to use strong narcotics, also known as mkpurummiri.
According to their suspicions, the young man emerged from the forest, charged like a bull, and dove on the women with his machetes, the speaker continued.
He instantly killed four women while seriously injuring two more. Even the two other laborers’ attempts to stop him failed since he was menacingly hitting the women.
“He fled the jungle after killing the women. We sent out a message via the town crier asking everyone to seek for the perpetrators as soon as we learned about the tragedy. But until recently, he had not been seen anywhere,” Ani said.
He said that the young man’s use of heavy narcotics while in the bush must have harmed his brain, allowing him to commit the crime.
Igwe Luke Ogbu, the community’s traditional leader, expressed horror at the incident.
“I can confirm that the young man who did this heinous act is well-known around here. Despite being a stranger, everyone is familiar with him. Before this occurrence, nobody in the neighborhood had ever gotten into a fight with him of any type.
Therefore, going forward, we will fight crystal meth (mkpurummiri) aggressively and start to identify the types of people who are moving into our neighborhood. This incident will cause us to reevaluate what occurs here and foreigners visiting as well, the
