A Black girl was skipped during a medal presentation at a gymnastics competition in Ireland. The incident was captured on video and went viral on social media, sparking outrage and condemnation.
The Black girl is shown looking bewildered yet hopeful as she waits for the official to recognize her mistake. The official, however, did not give the girl the final award before leaving.
In the video, the girl is seen standing in a line of children waiting to receive medals. The official handing out the medals skips the girl and goes on to give medals to the other children in the line. The girl looks confused and disappointed, and her teammates try to comfort her.

The girl’s parents alleged that the snub was due to racism. Gymnastics Ireland issued a statement apologizing for the incident and saying that it was investigating. The official involved in the incident was identified and expressed deep regret for what they described as an honest error.
Although the girl eventually received her medal, the incident has brought up significant issues regarding racism in both sport and society at large. Many individuals have argued that the official’s actions, even if they weren’t deliberate, are nonetheless representative of the unintentional prejudices that Black people deal with on a daily basis.
The incident serves as a reminder that racism persists throughout society and is still an issue in sports. It serves as a reminder that everyone has a duty to fight bigotry and make the world more inclusive.
