A bowhunter in Ontario is recovering after being attacked and body slammed by a black bear. The incident occurred on July 12, 2017, at the bowhunter’s family property near Hearst, Ontario.

According to CBC News, Wesley was archery hunting at his family’s property near Hearst, a town in Ontario, when he spotted a large black bear. What happened next was captured on Wesley’s GoPro-style camera. When the bear spots Wesley, it charges him and takes him down. For a brief moment, the camera faces the ground, leaving the viewer to wonder if the bear had killed him, then Wesley reemerges in the frame, quickly retreating to wherever his car is, I assume.

Wesley suffered a concussion, a broken nose, and several cuts and bruises. He was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released.

The bear was not found after the attack. Wildlife officials are conducting an investigation and are asking anyone who may have seen the bear to contact them.

The attack has raised concerns about bear safety in Ontario. There have been a number of bear attacks in the province in recent years, and officials are urging people to be aware of their surroundings and take precautions when in bear country.

Here are some tips for bear safety in Ontario:

  • Make noise when you are hiking or camping in bear country. This will help to alert bears to your presence and avoid surprising them.
  • Carry bear spray and know how to use it.
  • Do not approach bears, even if they appear to be docile.
  • If you see a bear, back away slowly and do not make any sudden movements.
  • If a bear charges you, fight back with everything you have. Do not play dead.

After this incident, Wesley is fortunate to still be alive. He is appreciative of his family and friends’ assistance and is motivated to rebuild his life. He also strongly supports bear safety, and he wants to share his experience in order to encourage others to do the same in bear territory.
