Oracle Invest Massively on Ampere chips
Over the past few years, Oracle has secretly invested about $500 million in the startup company Ampere Computing, which makes server chip technology. As a result, Oracle now owns more than 20% of the company, which is led by one of its board members.
Oracle previously declared that thanks to a partnership with cloud chipmaker Ampere Computing, its flagship database software will now function on devices with the Arm architecture.
Oracle has spent more than $100 million on Ampere chips for the past few months. This investment is part of Oracle’s effort to give its cloud an advantage over rivals such as Amazon and Google, which make their own server chips. Oracle has been investing in Ampere since it was founded in 2018.
Arm technology is becoming increasingly popular in the server market because it is more energy-efficient than traditional X86 technology. This is important for cloud providers, which need to keep their costs down.

Oracle Corporation is a multinational American company that specializes in computer technology. Its headquarters are in Austin, Texas. It specializes in the development and marketing of database software and technology, cloud-engineered systems, and enterprise software products like supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), human capital management (HCM), and enterprise performance management (EPM) software.
Oracle is one of the largest software companies in the world, with over 145,000 employees and a revenue of over $40 billion in 2023. The company’s products are used by over 400,000 customers in more than 175 countries.
Oracle was founded in 1977 by Larry Ellison, Bob Miner, and Ed Oates. The company’s first product was a database management system called Oracle Database. Oracle Database quickly became one of the most popular database management systems in the world, and it remains so today.
Oracle increased its ownership of Ampere in 2019 by investing $40 million, and it did so again in 2020 with a second $40 million investment. According to SEC records, Oracle looks to have increased its ownership share by over 20% in March 2021 after investing $300 million. Oracle has made a $426 million total investment.
Oracle and Microsoft also have a long history of partnering with each other, and their recent deal is a sign that their partnership is only getting stronger. The deal, which was announced in September 2023, allows customers to run Oracle Database services on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) in Microsoft Azure datacenters.
This is a significant development for both companies. For Oracle, it gives customers more flexibility in how they run their workloads. For Microsoft, it makes Azure a more attractive option for customers who are looking for a hybrid cloud solution.
