Witnesses and police have named Daniel James Penny, 24, as the person who put Jordan Neely, 30, in a fatal chokehold after what authorities believe to have been an altercation on a northbound F train on Monday.

As soon as the video of one train passenger choking another to death started to circulate online, the murder grew to symbolize more than just the devastating loss of one man.

Detectives in the case have spoken to around six witnesses who saw the disturbance and are seeking to talk with around four or five more.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Penny joined the Marines in 2017, and as of this writing, his lawyers at Raiser&Kenniff have released a statement confirming that he is a college student.

According to witnesses and police, Neely was apparently experiencing a mental episode while pacing and shouting along the subway line when Penny intervened, tackled him to the ground, and placed him in a chokehold.
