A video that was leaked on July 6 shows an easyJet captain requesting 20 volunteers to disembark from a trip the previous evening from Lanzarote to Liverpool because the aircraft was “too heavy to take off.”

The event occurred on flight U23364, which was supposed to depart from Lanzarote Airport (ACE) at 21:45 but was delayed by bad weather. The flight was bound for Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LIV).
A pilot can be heard addressing the passengers in video footage that a passenger recorded.

He said: ‘Because there are so many of you it’s a pretty heavy aircraft.

He added: “That heavy aircraft combined with a fairly short runway here in Lanzarote, and some winds which aren’t completely favorable at the moment, mean that with the current environmental conditions here in Lanzarote, the aircraft is too heavy at the moment to depart.”

Up to 20 participants were then given the option to leave the ship that night without continuing their journey. He stated that incentives for volunteers to disembark may reach 500 euros ($544) each.

“This is a routine operational decision in these circumstances and weight restrictions are in place for all airlines for safety reasons,” a spokesperson said.
