Money laundering, narcotics, and prostitution were just a few of the services provided by the powerful syndicate that Thabo Bester was a part of. Under Thabo Bester’s leadership, a powerful network of guards and inmates included female prison guards in a prostitution ring. Female prison guards worked as prostitutes at night in Mangaung Prison, where Thabo Bester famously escaped in 2022, under the guidance of a syndicate controlled by officials and “influential” convicts. Thabo Bester was a convicted rapist and murderer who not only created havoc within the jail but also operated a clandestine prostitution and drug business, putting other female prison guards in danger.
