Prostitution, drugs, and money laundering were just a few of the services offered by the influential syndicate in which Thabo Bester was involved.
A strong syndicate of guards and prisoners, led by Thabo Bester, included female prison guards in a prostitution ring.
Under the direction of a syndicate controlled by authorities and “influential” prisoners at Mangaung Prison, where Thabo Bester infamously escaped in 2022, female prison guards worked as prostitutes by night.
In addition to establishing a reign of terror inside the jail, Thabo Bester, a convicted rapist and murderer, ran a covert prostitution and drug enterprise, compromising other female prison guards in the process.
The disclosure presents a worrisome image of the innate weaknesses in the nation’s correctional system, where dishonest guards and prisoners work together to continue illegal activity without consequence. Thabo Bester’s involvement, a well-known criminal serving a sentence for horrendous crimes, highlights both the system’s inability to safeguard and rehabilitate its convicts and the widespread influence of organized crime even in prison.
Born on June 13, 1986, Thabo Bester is a convicted felon from South Africa who broke out of the Mangaung Correctional Centre in May 2022 by pretending to die in a fire in his cell.
He remained evasive for over a year until being apprehended in Arusha, Tanzania on April 8, 2023.
Celebrity doctor Nandipha Magudumana, Thabo’s partner and suspected collaborator, was also detained.[8] Bester earned the moniker “Facebook rapist” due to his use of the social media site to entice models with fictitious job postings.
Bester was given a life sentence after entering a guilty plea to two rapes and one murder.
