In a shocking scene, Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante collapsed during a live press conference on Tuesday morning. The mayor was addressing questions from reporters about homelessness when she suddenly went silent, paused for several seconds, and then kneeled to the ground.
Plante was responding to a question regarding the city’s homelessness when she abruptly stopped speaking and fell to the ground, pausing for a few seconds.
Her aides rushed to her side and immediately called for an ambulance. The press conference was abruptly canceled, and journalists were asked to leave the room. Paramedics entered the building but were not required to transport the mayor to a hospital.
A spokesperson for Plante confirmed that she had experienced a “malaise” but assured the public that she was “out of danger.” The spokesperson also stated that Plante would receive all necessary medical attention and thanked the public for its support.
Plante said on X, the platform that was once known as Twitter, that she was checked out by a medical team and was doing fine.
Plante wrote that she would “slow the rhythm of her activities over the coming days” as a precaution and that she would be unable to attend the Ville-Marie borough council meeting on Tuesday.
Quebec Premier François Legault was among the many well-wishers on X, the former Twitter, expressing his delight that the mayor was doing better.
