Dr. Refaat Alareer, a Palestinian poet, writer, literature professor, and activist, killed today together with his brother, sister, and four of her children in a targeted Israeli airstrike.
The contributions made by Dr. Alareer to Palestinian literature were noteworthy. Gaza Writes Back: Short Stories from Young Writers in Gaza, Palestine (2014) and Gaza Unsilenced (2015) were both edited by him.
Following an attack by Hamas on October 7, in which some 1,200 people were murdered, predominantly civilians, Israeli authorities began a massive military campaign in Gaza.
According to the health ministry administered by Hamas, over 17,100 people, largely civilians, have died as a result of Israel’s ceaseless shelling that has reached every corner of Palestinian land.
“My heart is broken, my friend and colleague Refaat Alareer was killed with his family a few minutes ago,” wrote his friend, the Gazan poet Mosab Abu Toha, on Facebook.
Ayman Safadi, the foreign minister of Jordan, has criticized Israel for its “blatant aggression” against Gaza and declared that his nation will not tolerate any effort to “empty the population” of the besieged area.
