Violet Avoid, a well-known journalist and filmmaker from Zimbabwe, tragically committed su!cide. The news of her death sent shockwaves through the artistic community, leaving many in mourning and searching for answers.
While the official cause of death has not yet been released, reports indicate that she took her own life on November 2nd, 2023, just one day after celebrating her birthday. This sudden tragedy has left many colleagues, friends, and fans devastated, as Avoid was known for her infectious positivity, creative vision, and dedication to her craft.
The filmmaker described in the now-viral video how she was raped at work, which resulted in a pregnancy that she attempted to conceal from her husband.
Avoid said that because she didn’t know who had raped her until the following morning after a drunken outburst, she didn’t know.
Zwnews.com reported according to sources, Violet had ingested rat poison, and her struggles included the process of filing for divorce and facing cyberbullying. Having recently relocated to the Philippines from China, she left behind four children—three girls and a boy.
Born and raised in Harare, Avoid quickly developed a passion for storytelling and filmmaking. She pursued her studies in film production, honing her skills and developing a unique artistic voice. Her short films garnered critical acclaim, earning recognition for their powerful narratives and poignant social commentary.
Avoid was a strong supporter of mental health awareness who used her position to draw attention to the difficulties and obstacles that people with mental illness experience. Her candor and honesty ignited crucial discussions about mental health in Zimbabwe, empowering people to get support and dispelling the stigma associated with this sometimes misunderstood subject.
The film industry in Zimbabwe has lost a bright light with Avoid’s passing. Her talent, resilience, and unwavering passion for storytelling were an inspiration to many.
