Born in the United States on January 28, 1976, William Leonard Roberts II, better known by his stage name Rick Ross, is a rapper and record executive. A prominent figure in modern hip-hop music, Rick Ross is renowned for his powerful lyrical imagery, “larger than life” appearance, and “booming” vocal delivery. His songs, which usually feature images of luxury, grandeur, and riches, tell a story of rising from poverty and dealing on the black market.
Before his debut single “Hustlin'” was released in March 2006, Ross turned down offers from Irv Gotti’s Murder Inc. and Diddy’s Bad Boy Entertainment. This led to a bidding war between Ross and Def Jam Recordings, where he inked a multimillion dollar deal with Jay-Z.
In August of the same year, he released Port of Miami, his debut studio album.
Trilla (2008) and Deeper Than Rap (2009), his second and third studio albums, respectively, opened at the top of the Billboard 200 chart. His fifth and sixth albums, God Forgives, I Don’t (2012) and Mastermind (2014), both achieved a double peak on the Billboard 200. The single “Aston Martin Music” (with Drake and Chrisette Michele) from his fourth album Teflon Don (2010) was certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
