Onyi Gadget, a phone vendor at Ogbeogonogo Market, was shot dead early on Wednesday by unidentified police officers while standing with his wife, whom he had married in late 2022. The incident took place near Ugbolu-Asaba road.
Onyeka’s wife witnessed the terrible incident as it occurred on the congested Ugbolu-Asaba road.
Witnesses said that the policeman demanded a N100 bribe from Onyeka, which he refused to give. The cop allegedly opened fire in retaliation, instantly murdering the young businessman.
The lack of a formal police response to the incident has angered the residents of Asaba. As a result, locals—particularly young people—have flocked to the streets to protest against police brutality and call for Onyeka’s justice.
According to an eyewitness who spoke with Instablog9ja, “He and his wife were on their way to work this morning when he was stopped by a team of police officers. They asked him for money and he gave them.
However, after a few minutes’ drive, he ran into another set of police officers who demanded that he gives them money. They asked him for N100 but he said he doesn’t have any money with because he had given his last cash to their colleagues.
One of the police officers cocked his gun and Onyi stepped on his accelerator but he was shot in the head before he could move. He is very popular in Asaba, he got married three months ago and his wife is currently pregnant.”
