Leonard Allan Cure was wrongfully convicted and imprisoned for over 16 years in Florida. He battled valiantly for his release and was set free three years ago. He was slain by a Georgia sheriff on Monday while being pulled over on his way home from seeing his mother.
Before Camden County Sheriff Jim Proctor’s office uploaded the dash and body camera footage online, Leonard Cure’s 53-year-old family watched it. According to his relatives, Cure may have resisted being taken into custody due to psychological damage he sustained while serving a 16-year sentence in Florida for an armed robbery he did not conduct.
Cure followed the deputy’s instructions to exit the automobile, but he stopped doing so after finding out he was being held under arrest.
Cure attacked the deputy after the cop deployed his Taser on him. The GBI claims that after using his Taser once again and striking Cure with a baton, the deputy took out his gun and opened fire.
The deputy threatened to taze Cure for speeding and irresponsible driving after the two had a verbal argument and Cure reached to the back of his truck and placed his hands there.
The two began to struggle and when Cure ended up on the ground, the deputy shot him.
“I believe there were possibly some issues going on, some mental issues with my brother,” Michael Cure said of his slain brother. “I know him quite well. The officer just triggered him, undoubtedly triggered him. It was excitement met with excitement.”
